BENGALURU: Santeshivara Lingannaiah Bhyrappa, arguably the most revered Kannada novelist of his time, passed away on Wednesday. He was 94. Bhyrappa was a novelist, philosopher and moreover a screenwriter who penned stories rooted in Indian philosophy and culture.
Bhyrappa’s stories brought out the shades of human nature, and his oeuvre, including 'Vamshavruksha’ (1972), ‘Tabbaliyu Neenade Magane’ (1977), ‘Matadana’ (2001), and ‘Nayi-Neralu’ (2006), were bestsellers.
PM Modi expressed condolences over the death of India’s celebrated novelist:
"In the passing of S.L. Bhyrappa Ji, we have lost a towering stalwart who stirred our conscience and delved deep into the soul of India. A fearless and timeless thinker, he profoundly enriched Kannada literature with his thought-provoking works. His writings inspired generations to reflect, question, and engage more deeply with society.
His unwavering passion for our history and culture will continue to inspire minds for years to come. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti."
For his yeoman contribution to the field of literature, Bhyrappa was honoured with the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2015, the Padma Shri in 2016, and the Padma Bhushan in 2023.
The last rites of the legendary writer will reportedly be held in Mysuru. More details are awaited.
