Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms in next three hours; Alert sounded for districts, including Thiruvananthapuram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Amidst heavy rainfall warning, an Orange alert was issued for two districts in Kerala. Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts are now under Orange alert. Meanwhile, IMD issued a yellow alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad districts today.

The Indian Meteorological Department defines heavy rain as a situation where rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm is received in 24 hours.

Moderate rain with thundershowers and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph are likely to occur at isolated places in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam districts during the next three hours. Light rain with thundershowers and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph are likely at isolated places in all other districts.

Yellow alert:

Friday - Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur.

Saturday - Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

IMD has also prohibited fishing activities in Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coast from today to Saturday in view of the heavy rainfall.
