NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has temporarily allowed the sale of 'green firecrackers' in Delhi and nearby regions. The court issued the order while considering the petitions seeking permission to manufacture and sell green firecrackers.

The bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran said that green firecrackers can be used in Delhi only from October 18 to 21. The apex court also considered the petitions filed by the Solicitor General and the Amicus Curiae.

The court observed that a balanced approach is needed, noting that even during the COVID-19 period- when a complete firecracker ban was in place- there was no major improvement in air quality. It added that green firecrackers are less harmful to the environment.

A special police team will be formed to ensure that only approved products with QR codes are sold. The court also said that notices will be issued to anyone violating the rules. People will be allowed to burst crackers from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the permitted days. The court further ruled that online sales of firecrackers through e-commerce websites will not be allowed.
