MUMBAI: A controversy has erupted after BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar from Maharashtra urged Hindu women to refrain from going to gyms, suggesting instead that they practice yoga at home. Speaking at a public event, Padalkar claimed that “a huge conspiracy” was underway and cautioned Hindu college students to be vigilant.

“A huge conspiracy is taking place. You should understand that. Take special care that you are not deceived by people who speak well and behave in a good way,” Padalkar said, implying that individuals from other communities were attempting to influence Hindu women.

He further advised families to monitor gym trainers and counsel women at home.

“People should notice who the trainer at the gym is. If women in your house are going to the gym, they should be given counselling. Girls should practice yoga at home - there is no need to go to the gym. They are deceiving you and doing great injustice,” he added.

Padalkar also demanded that college authorities ensure strict identity checks on campus, claiming that “youths entering colleges without ID proofs” should be identified and prevented from doing so.
