Centre yields to protesters' demands; judicial inquiry into Ladakh clash; retired Supreme Court judge to head committee 

NEW DELHI: The central government has announced a judicial inquiry into the Ladakh conflict. A committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge B.S. Chauhan has been appointed to investigate the conflict and the subsequent police action. The main demand of the protesters was a judicial inquiry into the conflict, to which the central government has now given in. Sonam Wangchuk had sent a message from jail demanding a judicial inquiry into the Ladakh firing. Sonam Wangchuk's stance was that he would remain in jail until a judicial inquiry was announced. Sonam's lawyer and brother had visited him in jail. The message was shared after this.

Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk was on a hunger strike in Leh demanding statehood for Ladakh and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule. The protest turned violent after police intervention.
Four people were killed in the clashes. Protesters said the deaths were caused by police firing. Reports said that around 90 people were injured in the clashes. The protesters had set fire to a CRPF vehicle.

Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on September 26 following this incident, under the National Security Act, on charges of conspiracy in the Ladakh conflict. A CBI investigation has also been announced against Wangchuk's NGO.
Sonam Wangchuk's partner Geetanjali J. Angmo had approached the Supreme Court, questioning Wangchuk's custody and demanding his immediate release. Sonam Wangchuk's bail application is currently under consideration by the court.
