KALPETTA: The real-life heroine who inspired the movie 'Oruthee' starring Navya Nair will be the LDF candidate for Kalpetta Municipality in Wayanad in the local body elections. It was S Soumya of Kallukadavu, Mynagappally, Kollam, who caught the chain snatchers who came on a bike in 2017.

Soumya was wearing her mother's two-sovereign necklace that was pawned earlier. When Soumya was returning from work, two men on a bike snatched this necklace and escaped.

Soumya chased the thieves' bike on her Activa scooter. The thieves slowed down their bike when a car came towards them. At this time, Soumya overtook the bike with her Activa. One of the thieves fell to the ground when the scooter hit the front wheel of the bike. Soumya subdued him. The second thief escaped with the necklace. Following the information received from the arrested thief, the escaped person was also arrested the next day. The broken necklace was also recovered. It was one gram short.

Husband's transfer as turning point

Her husband Shiju, a municipal officer, was transferred to Wayanad in 2017. That's how Soumya came to Wayanad. Soumya is contesting from Emily Thadam ward in Kalpetta municipality. Her main opponent is Ramla Subair of UDF. Soumya is also working as IIIYF Wayanad district vice president, IIDRM state secretary, and Navothana Moolya Samrakshana Samithi district secretary. Children: Sabanya and Sona.
