
WASHINGTON: Two soldiers were injured in a firing near White House, the official residence of US President Donald Trump. National guard soldiers suffered head injuries in the attack. One of them is a female guard. The two are West Virginia national guard soldiers. The police have taken Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the accused into custody. He has also sustained injuries.
Security has been tightened in the area. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director Kash Patel said the accused has been taken into custody. Initial reports said the 29-year-old Afghan national, who entered US in 2021 is behind the attack. Police said he acted alone and has not revealed a motive for the attack. The firing was at the Metro Stop near the White House.
Trump said, ‘This was a heinous assault and an act of evil, an act of hatred and an act of terror. It was a crime against our entire nation. It was a crime against humanity," he said.
He confirmed that the man taken into custody after the daylight shooting two blocks from the White House was "a foreigner who entered our country from Afghanistan."

"I can report tonight that based on the best available information, the Department of Homeland Security is confident that the suspect in custody is a foreigner who entered our country from Afghanistan - a hell hole on earth." Trump was in the golf club of his West Palm Beach in Florida at the time of the attack. Vice President J D Vance was in Kentucky. Trump has directed to deploy 500 more national members following the attack.
The police believe that the attack targeted the national guard members. Washington Mayor Muril Bowser termed the attack as a targeted shooting.
