MOSCOW: Ukrainian Navy drones have attacked two Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea off the coast of Turkey. The ships, the Virat and Kairos, are part of Russia's shadow fleet. The "shadow fleet" is a secretive network of Russian-owned oil tankers that operate under obscure ownership, names, and flags to evade Western sanctions and continue transporting oil. Neither ship was carrying oil at the time of the attack. They were heading to the Russian port of Novorossiysk.
The attack was carried out jointly by the Ukrainian Navy and the SBU intelligence agency using "Sea Baby" maritime drones. Turkey said the Kairos was attacked on Friday afternoon local time. The Virat was attacked on Friday night and this morning. Turkey rescued 45 crew members from both ships. It was also announced that the fire was under control.
Ukraine claimed that the ships were seriously damaged. Russia has not officially responded to the incident. Three people were killed and several others were injured in Russian airstrikes in various parts of Ukraine in the early hours of the morning. Power plants in Kyiv were damaged, disrupting power supply to 600,000 customers. Russia launched 36 missiles and 600 drones against Ukraine.
