Pick Samson over Shubman; Gill's slump draws ex-India cricketer’s suggestion

MUMBAI: The lack of a chance for Malayali player Sanju Samson in the Indian team in the T20 series against South Africa is the main topic of discussion among fans and former players. Even former players are unanimous in saying that Shubman Gill should be given a break and Sanju should be made the opener. Now, former Indian player Mohammad Kaif has come out with a similar opinion.

Pointing out the way Gill is getting out in the ongoing T20I series against South Africa, Kaif said that the time has come to include Sanju, who has not been given a chance despite the team management continuously supporting Gill, the vice-captain. He made the comment on his YouTube channel.

India, which had won the first T20I of the series, lost by eight wickets in the second match. The former dynamic middle-order batsman has spoken openly about Sanju's inclusion in the team at this situation. 'Look at how Gill is getting out, caught at slip, stepping out and mistiming, trying aggressive strokes like Abhishek Sharma and getting caught. He has tried everything. I think the time has come to give him a break and try players who are proven.' Kaif assessed.

Sanju Samson is a top-quality player; he hasn't received enough chances. There should not be double standards. Even vice-captains have been dropped before. If it is in the team's interest to rest Gill and bring in someone else, there is nothing wrong with it' added the cricketer-turned-commentator.
