NEW DELHI: CPM leader and Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas made public his fear of Mahatma Gandhi’s image disappearing from India's official currency. Brittas made a shocking revelation that a plan was underway to remove Mahatma Gandhi's image from Indian rupees. He said that the first phase has already been completed. Brittas said that one or two symbols of Arsha Bharat culture are being considered to replace the Gandhi image.

Brittas heavily critiqued Priyanka Gandhi for attending the Prime Minister's tea party, shortly after the passage of the Employment Guarantee Bill, which he said would put 50 crore poor people in India on the streets. Brittas, in a sardonic remark, said he would not be surprised if Priyanka Gandhi and her coterie attend the tea party after BJP removes Mahatma Gandhi from India’s currency notes.

The Central Government rechristened Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), and it has become a law. The VB—G RAM G Bill (Employment Guarantee Amendment Bill), brought by the Central Government to replace the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), was signed by President Droupadi Murmu. The Bill has received the President's assent after it was passed in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
