Hindu youth's gruesome lynching: Massive protest outside Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Strong protests erupted in India while attacks on minorities continue mercilessly in Bangladesh. Hundreds took to the streets in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Agartala, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday to protest the lynching of a Hindu youth in the neighbouring nation. The protest was led by Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal and other Hindu organisations near the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi.

"Boycott Bangladesh" slogans were raised. An effigy of Bangladesh Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus was burned. The protesters broke the barricades, leading to a scuffle with police. With this, the police resorted to a lathi charge. The activists were arrested and removed. Security was tightened in the area. In the wake of the protests, Bangladesh suspended the operations of visa centres in Delhi, Siliguri in West Bengal, and Tripura. The central government is closely assessing the situation. Protests are continuing strongly, including against Bangladesh embassies. The Editors Guild of India condemned the attacks on journalists and media institutions in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh has been rocked by violence since the shooting of anti-India leader Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, who led the protests that ousted Sheikh Hasina's government. Meanwhile, a 27-year-old Hindu youth, Dipu Chandra Das, was lynched and set on fire by a mob on charges of blasphemy. India later suspended the Indian visa office in Bangladesh.

Concerns over security

The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry summoned Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma on Tuesday and expressed grave concern. Dhaka expressed concern over the security of diplomatic personnel. It also issued a statement saying that these actions undermine values ​​such as mutual respect, peace and tolerance. It also asked India to ensure the security of embassies and officials.
