
KANNUR: Two migrant workers died after a mini-lorry carrying a concrete mixer lost control and overturned in Mutharikulam, Payyavoor. Twelve others were injured. The deceased were natives of Uttar Pradesh. Further details of the deceased have not been released.
The tragic accident took place at around 4.45 pm. The Nissan mini-lorry, which was returning to Sreekanthapuram after completing the construction of Daisy's new house near Mount St. Joseph Church in Kunjiparamba, overturned between Kunnathoor and Mutharikulam.
When the lorry reached a flat area after a steep descent, it hit a culvert and overturned. People at the scene said that 14 people, including the driver, were in the lorry as other workers on the way also boarded it as the lorry was returning after completing the day's work. The person sitting next to the driver and the worker sitting behind the machine died.
Twelve injured people were shifted to various hospitals in Kannur. Two of them are in critical condition. The lorry is owned by baker from Srikanthapuram. Except for the driver, all the others were workers from other states. Immediately after the lorry overturned, locals and devotees going to Kunnathoor Padi rushed the injured to a private hospital in Payyavoor, but two of them had already died. The bodies were shifted to Kannur Government Medical College Hospital.
Three people were trapped under the vehicle when the mini-lorry overturned. One was pulled out by locals. Two others were pulled out by the fire force team from Iritti by cutting the lorry. Traffic on the Kunnathoor Padi road was completely disrupted for two hours following the accident. Since it was the festive season, locals and Payyavoor police carried out the rescue operation amidst the rush of vehicles.
