
BENGALURU: The Congress leadership intervened as protests intensified over the demolition of around 300 houses using bulldozers in Karnataka. The AICC sought an explanation from the Karnataka government. AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal sought an explanation from Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar.
Shivakumar explained that the encroached land had been evacuated and that all due procedures were followed. Meanwhile, as the controversy intensified, the government announced that new houses would be constructed and provided to the evictees. The plan is to build a complex of 200 flats.
Around 300 houses were demolished in the Muslim-majority area of Yelahanka, Bengaluru, early yesterday morning. The government action left 3,000 people on the streets.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and senior Congress Leader P. Chidambaram had come out with strong criticism about the incident. Meanwhile, Shivakumar replied to Pinarayi Vijayan not to interfere in Karnataka's internal affairs.
