Demanded dowry back: Kalpana beaten to death by husband and Deepali

MUMBAI: A woman was beaten to death by her husband and sister in law for demanding her dowry back. The incident took place in Maharashtra's Palghar district on Saturday. The woman has been identified as Kalpana Soni (35). Police have arrested her husband Mahesh Soni and his sister Deepali Soni.

Kalpana got married to Mahesh in 2015 and used to live with her in-laws in Virar West. Her in-laws physically and mentally abused her. There were frequent verbal arguments over this. After the fight on Saturday, Kalpana demanded that the dowry her family had given her be returned. She said she was going back to her own house. Senior inspector Prakash Kawale of Bolinj police station said that Mahesh and Deepali attacked Kalpana with a sharp weapon in anger.

Kalpana, who was seriously injured, was taken to the hospital by her neighbors, but she died. Mahesh and Deepali initially said that Kalpana had slipped and injured herself. However, doctors confirmed that she died due to brutal beating. Kalpana and Mahesh have a seven-year-old daughter. The police arrested Mahesh and Deepali on the complaint filed by Kalpana's mother's brother. The court remanded both of them for seven days.
