KASARAGOD: Police have arrested a husband for allegedly throwing acid on his estranged wife. The shocking acid attack took place on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at around 6.30 pm in the Bedakam police station limits.
The Bedakam police have arrested Raveendran (59) in connection with the incident. Raveendran's wife Janaki (55) and her sister's son and autorickshaw driver Suresh Babu (36) were injured in the attack.
On Tuesday evening, Janaki was cutting fish near her house, when Raveendran, who was drunk, came from behind and poured acid on her body. Janaki suffered serious burns on her back and hands in the attack. Hearing her screams, her daughter Ajitha came out of the house. The accused rushed towards Ajitha with acid. However, a major accident was averted as Ajitha immediately went inside the house and closed the door. The complaint states that the accused tried to kick the door open but failed.
After Ajitha made phone calls in fear, her relative Suresh Babu and her brothers arrived at the scene. While they were coming in the car, Raveendran threw acid at them too. The people in the car raised the glass in time, so the acid did not fall on their bodies. However, Suresh Babu suffered minor burns. Janaki's brother's wife was in the field at the time, so she escaped unharmed.
A panic was created in the area when the accused started fighting with the locals who had arrived after hearing the commotion. On receiving the information, the Bedakam police reached the spot and took the accused into custody. The seriously injured Janaki was immediately admitted to Chengala Nayanar Hospital. The police also clarified that Suresh Babu's injury is not serious.
Relatives told the police that the accused Raveendran was a person who regularly caused fights at home when he was drunk. He had a habit of taking things from the house to sell them and drink. The police also believe that the arguments that followed this are the reason why he stayed away from his wife.
Eight months ago, Raveendran was found consuming poison, but he survived with treatment. Later, he was found in the Karichery river under the influence of alcohol. It was after these incidents that Janaki and Raveendran began living apart. The initial conclusion is that the acid attack was a continuation of this.
