
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Dr A.P. Majeed Khan (91), Chancellor of Noorul Islam University and Chairman of nearly 20 Noorul Islam educational and healthcare institutions, passed away on Tuesday. He had been undergoing treatment for age-related ailments.
The body will be kept for public viewing at Noorul Islam University, Thuckalay, from 8.30 am to 10.30 am today. Public homage will also be held at his residence in Neyyattinkara from 11.30 am to 3.30 pm. The funeral will be held at 4 pm at the Neyyattinkara Town Juma Masjid.
Dr Majeed Khan was the son of Alison Muhammad and Salmabeevi, hailing from Vellamkulam Bungalow, Neyyattinkara. He was widely regarded as a pioneer who brought transformative changes to the higher education and healthcare sectors in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
His journey began with the launch of Amaravila NIITI, Kerala’s first private technical training institute. He later went on to establish the first engineering college in Kanyakumari district.
During the formation of Kerala state, students from his institutions actively participated in the mission to survey and demarcate the state’s boundaries. Dr Majeed Khan also played a significant role in Kerala’s electrification, particularly in the Malabar region. During the India–China war, he and his institutions contributed by providing technical training in aircraft engineering to the Indian Army personnel. Dr Majeed Khan founded NIMS Medicity in Neyyattinkara in connection with the 50th anniversary of the Noorul Islam Educational Trust.
He is survived by his wife Saifunneesa; children Shabnam Shafiq (Executive Director, Noorul Islam Educational Trust) and M.S. Faisal Khan (Pro-Chancellor, Noorul Islam University and Managing Director, NIMS Medicity); sons-in-law Dr Salim Shafiq (haematologist) and Fathima Misaj; and grandchildren Fahees Shafiq, Farzeen Shafiq, Suhara Khan and Sohaib Khan.
