KOCHI: As the war involving Iran continues, the shortage of cooking gas in India has become more severe. Authorities have imposed strict restrictions in response to the situation. The curbs mainly apply to the use of commercial LPG cylinders. Reports say restaurant owners and food outlets have already received notices regarding the new restrictions.
Authorities have directed that commercial gas cylinders be supplied on a priority basis to hospitals, schools, and orphanages. Restaurants and other eateries are not included in the priority list. Because of this, many food businesses may face serious difficulties in getting gas cylinders. Due to the shortage, several eateries have shut down in different places, including Mumbai. Reports say nearly 20 percent of restaurants in Mumbai have already closed.
Officials said there is no shortage of domestic LPG cylinders for now. However, restrictions on bookings will continue. Authorities are also concerned that restaurant owners may begin using domestic cylinders on a large scale. If that happens, it could worsen the crisis.
To ensure gas availability across the country, the central government has formed a three-member committee. The government will also monitor the hoarding of domestic cylinders. Officials say there is currently no overall LPG shortage in India. Meanwhile, reports suggest that the price of LPG cylinders, including those used for household purposes, may increase again. The price of cylinders was raised recently.
The prices of engine oil and lubricants have also been increased. Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has sent a letter to distributors informing them about the price hike, stating that under the current situation, the increase has become unavoidable.
