KOCHI: Laser lights used at DJ parties, carnivals and festival events are emerging as a serious threat to the safety of passenger aircraft. Bright laser beams can cause severe danger to pilots, especially during landing and take-off, when aircraft fly at lower altitudes.
According to information submitted by the Civil Aviation Ministry to Parliament, 548 such incidents were reported across the country in 2024, while 534 cases were recorded in 2025 so far. Delhi reported the highest number of incidents. Within Kerala’s airspace, 42 incidents were reported in 2024 and 39 in 2025.
In addition to laser lights, hydrogen balloons and illuminated kites have also posed problems for aircraft operations. Authorities suspect that in some cases, individuals with criminal intent deliberately aim laser pointers at aircraft cockpits. However, identifying the source of such laser beams is often difficult. In three incidents reported near Chennai airport in May and June, officials were unable to trace the origin.
If laser lights are directed towards airports, they can interfere with runway signal lights, affecting a pilot’s judgment and calculations. In view of this, the Civil Aviation Ministry has instructed states to remain alert and take strict action against the use of laser lights near airports.
Jail term and fine up to Rs 1 crore
1. If pilots report laser interference, airport authorities usually inform the police. However, in many cases, FIRs are not registered.
2. Aircraft rules and aerodrome manuals clearly restrict the use of laser lights in airport surroundings. Violators can face imprisonment and fines of up to Rs 1 crore.
