
PERAMBALUR: With the opposition strengthening their arguments over gang violence increasing in the state, the police gunned down a notorious gangster in Perambalur. Azhakuraja (30), a notorious criminal, was killed in the encounter. The Tamil Nadu police opened fire on him when he tried to escape after attacking an officer during evidence collection.
The injured sub-inspector was admitted to the hospital. Azhakuraja was an accused in the case of the attempted murder of gangster Vellaikaali by throwing a bomb while the latter was returning from court on the 24th. Azhakuraja was arrested after an investigation conducted by special teams in this case.
The police had taken Azhakuraja to the Thirumanthurai forest area as part of an evidence collection to know where the weapons used in the murder were hidden. It is reported that the gangster took out a sharp weapon and stabbed a sub-inspector who was with him. The police opened fire after the accused tried to escape through the forest. Azhakuraja, who was shot in the head, died on the spot.
