IMPHAL: Clashes between Naga and Kuki groups in the Tangkhul area of Ukhrul district in Manipur have left 25 houses and four government quarters burnt. The violence intensified during a visit by the Deputy Chief Minister. As the situation went out of control, hundreds of people fled their homes in Litan and Mangkot villages. An indefinite curfew has been imposed in the area.
Around 11.30 pm on Sunday, a large group of attackers reportedly began setting houses on fire in Litan Bazaar. Residents also heard gunshots from automatic rifles, causing panic. Preliminary reports say 25 houses were completely destroyed, including two belonging to members of the Kuki community.
Fearing further attacks, members of both the Kuki and Naga communities are leaving the area in large numbers. People are seeking safety by travelling in trucks, private vehicles and on foot. Many are leaving with whatever belongings they can carry, including household items and valuables.
The violence is said to have been triggered by a dispute during a drinking session in Sirarakhong on February 7. During the altercation, a Tangkhul Naga youth named Sterling was allegedly assaulted and later admitted to a hospital in Imphal with serious injuries.
Security forces, including the BSF, CRPF and Assam Rifles, have been deployed in the area. Troops from the Bihar Regiment and Mahar Regiment have also been sent to control the situation. Saikul MLA Kimneo Haokip from the Kuki community and Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah from the Tangkhul Naga community visited the area. Litan is a small commercial town located about 35 km from Imphal. It is home to both Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities and serves as a local trade centre for nearby villages.
