MYSURU: Ikigai, a pure vegetarian café in Mysuru, opened primarily to serve kids and family, had to cancel a even after facing strong backlash. The café provides occasional jamming sessions and takes pride in its Kannada heritage. Soothing Kannada retro songs often accompany the dishes served. However, the café owners never thought that they would come under attack for permitting a Malayali jamming session. A boycott threat followed after pro-Kannada activists and locals disapproved of the decision to allow a jamming session for Malayalees.
The threat seemed real, so the café owners had to instantly call off the scheduled event and offer a clarification.
Statement from café:
My Dear Mysurians,
I the owner of Ikigai cafe Mysuru, want to express my deepest sympathy to people spreading so much hate towards cafe for unnecessary reasons we at Ikigai have been hosting and will always host Kannada jamming, the ones who can show anger and disrespect and threaten us can please come and Be part of our Kannada jamming and support local young artists and Kannada
When a group of Malayali students approached us, we dint know it was such a big crime to give them a place to jam a safe entertainment environment for students from different state but we have no interest in conducting such jams anymore! No Malayalam jam !
The comments are largely supportive of the owner’s decision, while many blamed Malayali students for attempting to impose their culture in Karnataka. Many others raised anger over the surging Malayali population in Karanataka said the migrant issues are largely affecting Kannadigas. Others showed their ire by alleging that Malayali students were trying desperately to make Mysuru a Mini Kerala.
