NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is preparing to implement serious changes in the Class 12th examination. The highlight would be turning the evaluation of answer sheets completely digital. Along with this, the re-evaluation of answer sheets will also be eliminated. CBSE Examination Controller Dr Sanyam Bharadwaj says that the new methods will be implemented from this year. However, the re-evaluation process will continue for Class 10. The new move is part of the continuous efforts to increase efficiency and transparency in the evaluation process.

The evaluation is done through a method called On-Screen Marking (OSM). Immediately after the exam, the answer sheet will be scanned clearly. It will be stored on the CBSE server. Later, this digital copy will be given to the teachers during the evaluation. They will mark the answers directly on the screen. Special software will be used for this.

The marks for each answer are recorded separately in their respective places. The teacher will be able to submit the paper only if he/she gives marks to all columns allotted. CBSE believes this step would henceforth eliminate errors committed during evaluation by teachers. This method is being implemented with international cooperation. CBSE says there will be no need for revaluation as the digital process will be highly precise. The answer key will also be provided digitally.

Implementing OSM will help avoid delays in releasing exam results. It will also reduce manpower and cost. Teachers participating in the evaluation will be able to continue working in their own schools. All affiliated schools will also be able to participate in the evaluation. Reports indicate that the authorities have instructed schools to prepare systems for the smooth implementation of OSM. CBSE has started efforts to make the OSM method easier for teachers by conducting training programs and mock tests.
