NEW DELHI: Despite halting imports of Russian oil under US pressure, India is now likely to proceed with the purchase of Russia’s fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, the Sukhoi Su-57E, along with access to its source code. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) is expected to soon give approval for the purchase of around 40 aircraft. The Sukhoi Su-57 is capable of evading advanced radar systems and can fly at speeds of up to twice the speed of sound. It is often compared to the US F-35 in terms of capabilities.

United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), the manufacturer of the Sukhoi jets, has confirmed that technical consultations are in the final stage. The deal is expected to include source code and local production at the facilities that currently manufacture the Su-30MKI used by the Indian Air Force. Access to the source code would allow India to make indigenous modifications to the aircraft. Meanwhile, a contract for 114 Rafale fighter jets from France was finalised last week. The Rafale is a 4.5-generation fighter aircraft.

Response to China’s J-35
The Su-57E can be equipped with Astra Mk-1 and Mk-2 missiles, Rudram anti-radiation missiles, and the Russian-made R-77 missile. India’s own indigenous stealth fighter project is expected to become operational only around 2035. The possible induction of the Su-57E is being seen as a response to China’s J-20 and J-35 stealth fighter jets and the growing regional threat perception. Reports also suggest that China is preparing to supply fifth-generation fighter jets to Pakistan, which has added urgency to India’s decision to move quickly on the deal with Russia.

Although the United States has shown willingness to offer the F-35, there is a significant price difference. An F-35 is estimated to cost around Rs 900-950 crore per unit, while the Su-57E is expected to cost around Rs 650 crore. Additionally, the US is unlikely to share the source code, which is a key factor for India.

  • Payload capacity of about 10,000 kg
