NEW DELHI: As the war intensifies in West Asia, there are concerns about the safety of lakhs of Indians in Iran and the Gulf countries. Around 3,000 Indian students are stranded in Iran, which is facing a joint US-Israeli attack. Around 2,000 students stranded in Iran are from Jammu and Kashmir. 1,200 are in conflict zones.

India had asked those in Iran to return. The students remained in Iran after the university threatened to fail them in their exams if they left the country. Meanwhile, a good portion of the 10,000 Indians have returned.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called an emergency meeting of the Cabinet Security Committee at night to assess the situation. The Ministry of External Affairs has asked students to move to safer places. The Indian Embassy in Tehran is in touch with the students. The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association and the parents have written to the Prime Minister requesting the safe evacuation of the students. It is indicated that the evacuation will take longer due to the closure of airports and difficult air travel.

Hundreds of tourists from India are stranded at airports including Dubai due to the suspension of flight services. The Indian Embassy in Kuwait is in touch with the stranded Indians. Hotels and other facilities will be arranged for the tourists.
