THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government is planning to increase the salaries of nurses working in private hospitals. The decision is to raise the minimum basic salary to Rs 28,000. It has also been decided to fix the basic salary at Rs 40,000 for nurses working in hospitals with up to 800 beds. The government will also announce special allowances for nurses. A new draft policy will be released soon.

The draft policy will provide 60 days to submit objections and suggestions. The decision to increase salaries comes following the protests by nurses demanding better pay. Meanwhile, the United Nurses Association (UNA) will hold a state council meeting in Kozhikode tomorrow, insisting that the basic salary should be Rs 40,000. The meeting will also discuss the next phase of protest programs.
