AHMEDABAD: India won the T20 World Cup final on Sunday by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs. The fans were excited over India retaining the World Cup title, the first by any country. However, an incident in the match has, in a little way, dampened the festive vibe. Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh touched the wrong nerve during the game after needlessly trying to throw the ball at the stumps, which ended up landing hardly on New Zealand player Daryl Mitchell. The ICC intervened in the matter and fined the player.
Arshdeep was fined 15 per cent of his match fee. The incident occurred in the 11th over of the New Zealand innings. Bowler Arshdeep easily took the ball defended by Daryl Mitchell, who was at the crease, and the Indian pacer needlessly threw it at Mitchell, aiming for a run-out. With this, Daryl Mitchell turned furiously at Arshdeep. At first, Arshdeep walked away without even apologising.
The umpire then intervened and warned Arshdeep. Meanwhile, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav rushed to Daryl Mitchell and calmed the situation down. There are comments on social media, including from Indians, that it was Arshdeep's fault for behaving so aggressively when the match was almost over, with India about to be crowned the winners.
However, after the match, Arshdeep Singh approached Daryl Mitchell and apologised. A video later went viral showing the Kiwi player accepting Arshdeep's apology and the two standing with their arms around each other's shoulders.
