PYONGYANG: North Korea has expressed support for Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. The country also accused the United States and Israel of carrying out illegal military attacks that led to the killing of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
A spokesperson for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said the country respects the decision and the right of the Iranian people after the Assembly of Experts selected a new leader.
“We respect the right and choice of the Iranian people in selecting a new leader through the Iranian Assembly of Experts. We express grave concern and strongly condemn the aggression of the United States and Israel, which, by launching an unlawful military attack against Iran, are undermining the foundations of regional peace and security and increasing instability in the international landscape,” the spokesperson said.
He added that such actions weaken a country’s political system and territorial integrity and cannot be accepted. “The entire world should condemn and reject such actions,” the spokesperson said.
Earlier, North Korea had criticised the war by the United States and Israel against Iran, describing it as the actions of a gang.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump repeated threats against Iran just hours after saying the war would end soon. Iran also warned Trump to be cautious.
Trump said that if Iran blocks oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, the United States would respond with attacks “twenty times stronger” than previous strikes. He also warned that Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei “will not live peacefully.”
