THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala is currently experiencing a period of intense heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for eight districts. These districts are Kannur, Kasaragod, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Kottayam, and Alappuzha.
Temperatures in isolated areas of Kannur may reach 38 degrees Celsius. Palakkad and Kasaragod are expected to see temperatures around 37 degrees Celsius. Other districts under the alert may record temperatures near 36 degrees Celsius. Officials warn that the combination of high temperatures and humidity will create uncomfortable conditions, excluding hilly regions. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activity during peak daytime hours.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has also issued an orange alert for high Ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This alert is specific to regions where the UV index has reached levels between 8 and 10. These areas include Kottarakkara, Konni, Chengannur, Changanassery, Munnar, and Thrithala.
High UV levels pose risks of sunburn, skin irritation, and eye-related health concerns. Radiation is typically strongest between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Authorities strongly advise the public to avoid direct sunlight during these hours. When outdoors, residents should use protective gear like hats, umbrellas, and sunglasses. Wearing loose-fitting cotton clothing that covers the body is also recommended.
