CHENNAI: An MP in Tamil Nadu has made a controversial and sexist remark against actor and superstar Nayanthara. The comment was made by AIADMK leader and Rajya Sabha member C V Shanmugam. He made the remark while criticising a public outreach programme of M K Stalin. The statement has triggered strong criticism on social media. Many people said such comments are unacceptable from a person in a responsible position.
Ahead of the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, volunteers of DMK have been visiting homes. They are running a campaign called “Tell us your dream.”
Mocking this campaign, Shanmugam said, “What if someone says they want Nayanthara? Can you make that happen? If someone’s dream is to marry Nayanthara, will Stalin arrange it?” His comments were widely seen as offensive.
Shanmugam made these remarks while speaking at a protest event held in Viluppuram district against the DMK government. Leaders of the DMK have strongly reacted against his statement. However, the AIADMK has not yet given an official response.
This is not the first time Shanmugam has made such remarks. Last year, he made a controversial comment while criticising Stalin’s announcements. He had said that at this rate, Stalin might even promise a “free wife.”
