NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now set a new record as the longest-serving head of an elected government in India. He achieved this milestone after completing 8,931 days as the head of government, including his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister and as the Prime Minister of India. He surpassed the previous record of 8,930 days held by former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling.
Narendra Modi first became the Chief Minister of Gujarat on October 7, 2001, and remained in office until May 21, 2014. With over 13 years in power, he is also the longest-serving Chief Minister of Gujarat. He later became Prime Minister and has held the position for three consecutive terms, and continues in office. He is also the first Prime Minister of India to be born after independence.
Modi was sworn in as the 14th Prime Minister of India on May 26, 2014. He is the first non-Congress leader to come to power with a full majority in the Lok Sabha. He completed two full terms and returned to power for a third consecutive term, becoming the first non-Congress Prime Minister to do so.
However, the record for the longest uninterrupted tenure as Prime Minister is still held by Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister.
