India’s first passive euthanasia patient; Harish Rana to be laid to rest today, donates heart valve and cornea

NEW DELHI: The funeral rites of Harish Rana (32), who passed away after being in coma for 4599 days, will be held today. The funeral will be held in Ghaziabad in Wednesday morning. Close family members will attend the funeral. The family has donated his heart valves and cornea.

Harish Rana, who was the first person to be euthanized by the Supreme Court, died at AIIMS in Delhi at 4.10 pm yesterday. Harish was in a coma for 12 years, 7 months and four days. Harish of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, was an engineering student at Panjab University. Harish fell from the fourth floor of a paying guest house on August 20, 2013, and suffered serious brain damages. He had been in a coma since then. The Supreme Court allowed euthanasia on March 11 following the request of his parents.


Harish was shifted from his home in Ghaziabad to AIIMS on the 14th. He was under the observation of a ten-member expert medical team in the palliative care unit. Life-saving equipment, feeding tubes and oxygen support were gradually changed. Pain was reduced to the minimum. Painkillers were given. Harish said goodbye to the world yesterday, the tenth day after being admitted to the hospital.
