KOTTAYAM: P C George strongly criticized in harsh language amid criticism against the central government and the state unit of the BJP over the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) amendment. It is because of the BJP’s decency they are carrying Christians along, and pointed that Christians constitute only about 2.5% of India’s population, said George, the NDA candidate of Poonjar. ‘There are priests who say all kinds of nonsense. The very mention of BJP agitates them. They don’t have stability in their thinking. No one needs to worry about the new amendment. No other political party has accepted Christians as much as the BJP has,’ George said.
He also questioned whether there had been as many Christian chief ministers even during Congress rule. ‘Even when Congress was in power, were there this many Christian Chief Ministers? Priests should not hide such facts and speak irresponsibly. That is why I am speaking strongly,’ he said.
Pala Biship Mar Joseph Kallarangatt had stated that the FCRA amendment has created significant concern among common people and the Christian minority. While acknowledging that amendments to plug loopholes and improve governance can be positive, he said the changes now appear to shift from a ‘regulated’ approach to a more ‘restrictive’ one. He also warned that the amendment could negatively impact constitutional rights such as freedom of religion, the right to run institutions, and the autonomy of minority educational institutions.
