KOCHI: Advocate Muhammed Ziyad has withdrawn from representing filmmaker Ranjith, who was arrested over allegations of sexually assaulting an actress on a film set.
Ziyad, who also served on the film’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), faced criticism for taking up the case, as it involved an alleged incident that occurred during the same production. Following the controversy, he decided to step down from the case. The advocate said he has informed Ranjith’s family about his decision to step back from the case.
It is reported that the actress had not approached the ICC with a complaint during the time of the film’s shooting. Meanwhile, Ranjith’s bail plea is scheduled to be considered by the court tomorrow, and a new lawyer will represent him.
Caravan taken into police custody
The investigation team has tightened the noose against director Ranjith in connection with allegations of sexual assault against an actress. The caravan, where the alleged attempt of assault is said to have taken place during a film shoot, has been located in Fort Kochi.
No CCTV cameras were installed inside the caravan. The police have moved the court seeking custody of Ranjith, and the request will be considered tomorrow. Based on the evidence collected so far, the police are preparing for detailed questioning.
Police will also gather information from actor Bobby Kurian and assistant director Shalini, who worked on the film. This comes after reports that Ranjith tried to evade authorities upon learning about the case.
Information shared with SIT
Details of the new sexual assault case against Ranjith have been shared with the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was formed to probe allegations of sexual misconduct in the film industry based on the Hema Committee Report.
