One of the earliest singers who lent her voice to Bollywood melodies for over seven decades has bid farewell. With the passing of Asha Bhosle, an entire era of Indian music comes to an end. The younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha carved her own space in Bollywood and beyond with her distinct style. Having sung thousands of songs, she was also recognized in the 2011 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Asha began her musical journey in 1943 at the age of nine. By then, her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar had already established herself in the industry, and she remained the first choice of most composers. In the early 1950s, Asha was often limited to specific types of songs--mainly dance numbers and cabarets. She later earned recognition as a singer capable of handling every genre with ease.

Even then, there was no one to replace Asha when it came to dance numbers. Songs like “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” (Caravan), “Yeh Mera Dil” (Don), “Dum Maro Dum” (Hare Rama Hare Krishna), and “O Haseena Zulfonwali” (Teesri Manzil) dominated Bollywood dance floors for over two decades with her voice. In the 1960s and 70s, if a major film featured a song picturized on Helen, it was almost always Asha’s voice behind it.

In the 1980s, many critics claimed that Asha Bhosle was not on par with Lata Mangeshkar, arguing that she could not handle ghazals like her sister. But with her outstanding performance in Umrao Jaan, Asha shattered those misconceptions. She rendered ghazals with remarkable ease and elegance, earning her first National Award. Over the years, she received numerous accolades, including multiple National Film Awards.

At the age of 16, defying her family, Asha married 31-year-old Ganpatrao, but the relationship later ended. Returning to life with three children, she found strength and survival through music. Later, in 1980, at the age of 47, she married renowned music composer R D Burman.
