CHENNAI: The ongoing controversy surrounding the high-profile leak of Thalapathy Vijay’s upcoming film, Jana Nayagan, has taken a sharp political turn. Actress Kasthuri Shankar recently admitted to viewing leaked segments of the unreleased film, sparking a fresh wave of debate across social media and political circles.
"Three-hour propaganda" film
Following the illegal circulation of a high-definition version of the film on platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, Kasthuri did not hold back in her assessment. Speaking to the media, she described the H. Vinoth directorial as a “three-hour propaganda piece” meticulously crafted to bolster Vijay’s political outfit, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
"It’s the talk of the town right now," Kasthuri remarked. "If this movie is seen by the public, it is beneficial to the TVK, not the BJP or the DMK—the parties that Vijay is targeting."
Allegations of an "Inside Job"
Beyond the film's content, Kasthuri raised serious concerns regarding the logistics of the leak, specifically pointing toward the possibility of insider involvement. She questioned how a high-quality, unedited version of such a massive project could bypass the security protocols of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Kasthuri suggested that the leak might not be a random act of piracy but a strategic "inside job" orchestrated to ensure the film's message reaches the masses. She implied that someone within the circle—or sympathetic to the film's political agenda—may have intentionally bypassed legal channels to overcome the current hurdles in securing a theatrical release.
"The film is available online without proper edits or censorship," she noted, questioning whether the leak was a deliberate move to create "optics" and bypass the revising committee's delays.
Industry in Turmoil
The leak has sent shockwaves through the Tamil film industry, leaving the cast and crew devastated. KVN Productions has already issued a stern legal notice, warning that anyone sharing or downloading the leaked content will face criminal prosecution. Leading cast members, including Pooja Hegde and Mamitha Baiju, have expressed deep sadness over the breach, noting that years of hard work have been compromised by piracy. Meanwhile, the Chennai Cyber Crime police have initiated arrests as investigations into the source of the leak continue.
Road to the Elections
Jana Nayagan is widely regarded as Vijay’s final cinematic venture before he transitions fully into active politics ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections. With the film currently mired in censorship delays and now a massive digital leak, the "People’s Hero" (as the title translates) finds his silver-screen swan song at the centre of a real-world political storm.
As of now, the producers are fighting a dual battle: one in the courts against piracy, and another with the revising committee to bring the film to theatres finally.
