THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 23-year-long wait is almost over. Finally, Konni has been draped in red through K U Janeesh Kumar. He got a comfortable majority after surviving the challenges raised by UDF’s P Mohanraj and NDA’s K Surendran. The people who stood with Adoor Prakash from 1996 to 2019 changed their mind this time.
Janeesh got a majority of 9953 votes in Konni where a poll percentage of 70.07 was registered. 54099 votes came to Janesh Kumar's account. UDF candidate P Mohanraj got 44146 votes and K Surendran of the NDA obtained 39786 votes. In 2016 polls, Adoor Prakash garnered 72,800 votes. Adoor defeated LDF candidate R Sanal Kumar for 20748 votes. Although Janesh Kumar could not overcome that majority, it is an invaluable achievement that they were able to destroy the UDF's fortress.
However, Adoor Prakash was unable to repeat the success of the 2016 assembly elections in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. He won with a slight majority in the last Lok Sabha polls. His majority was 2721 votes.
Congress candidate P Mohanraj came second and senior BJP leader K Surendran finished third. The seat was vacated by former Congress minister Adoor Prakash after he won the Attingal Lok Sabha polls.
