KOCHI: A woman who tried to board a moving train from the platform died tragically after falling and getting crushed under the train. Chippi (31), wife of Baiju, of Thudamthil house, Nenmeni South Munroe Thuruthu, died in the incident. She was in a hurry to get home and take her mother-in-law to the hospital.
The accident took place at 5.11 am on Thursday at platform number 5 of Ernakulam South Railway Station. While trying to board the ordinary coach of the Ernakulam-Vanchinad Express train, which left a minute late, she lost her grip and fell onto the track between the platform and the train. Chippi's head was hit by the wheel. The passengers stopped the train by pulling the safety chain. The body, which was stuck between the wheels, was pulled out after 45 minutes. A postmortem was conducted at Ernakulam General Hospital, and the body was cremated at her house in Munroe Thuruthu late at night. Chippi worked at the document registration office near the Kakkanad Post Office.
Chippi left for her hometown on Thursday morning to take her ailing mother-in-law to the hospital. Chippi, who reached the station early in the morning from her residence in Vazhakala, bought a ticket to travel on the Guruvayur-Thiruvananthapuram Intercity Express that stops at Munroe Thuruthu station. Vanchinad does not stop at Munroe Thuruthu. It is believed that the accident occurred when she mistakenly tried to board Vanchinad instead of Intercity. The RPF received CCTV footage of the woman running down from the footbridge at the northern end of the platform. Chippi, who completed Plus Two and a computer course, has worked at Akshaya Kendra in her hometown. She came to Kakkanad, Ernakulam, for work only six months ago.
