Global COVID-19 death toll crosses 100,000, more than 20,000 died in US alone

NEW YORK: The worldwide number of fatalities from the novel coronavirus pandemic is rising day by day. The death toll rose to 1,08,770 on Sunday. More than 17 lakh patients are undergoing treatment in various parts of the world. US is the worst hit.

The United States tops the number of deaths (5,03,177) and infected (20,577) in the world. More than 1,800 people died in the US alone yesterday. Half of the deaths were reported in New York. There are more than 1.7 lakh patients in New York.

Italy is the second most hit with 19,468 deaths. The lockdown has been extended to May 3 in the country. Death rates in Britain, France and Germany are more. More than 500 deaths have died in Spain in the last 24 hours. With this, 16,353 people have died of the virus.

Meantime, COVID-19 is spreading to African countries. The World Health Organization has warned that the situation will worsen in the coming weeks.
