Malabar gliding frog spotted in Kochi city

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Malabar gliding frog, a rhacophorid tree frog species found in rainforest trees in the Western Ghats, has been spotted in Kochi city.

It was Rajeev, a biology teacher at St Joseph's School, Kizhakkambalam, and photographer who found the multicoloured frog near a pond near the house of Ratheesh in Eloor, Ernakulam. Mathew, HOD, Department of Zoology at SH College, has confirmed this. Earlier, this frog species, which is rarely spotted in Kerala, was found in Pullatt in the Malabar region. The scientific name of this endangered species is 'Rhacophorus malabaricus'.

15 m in a single jump

  • This frog can fly up to fifteen meters in a single jump.
  • The body colour of this frog species is green. It is up to 10 cm long. The legs are yellow in colour.
