MALAPPURAM: The Kalikavu police have registered a case in connection with the collapse of a football gallery in Malappuram. The case has been registered against the organizers of the football tournament. Nearly 100 people were injured in the accident that took place at Kalikavu Poongode last night.

The tournament was organized by a group of young people from the area. The organizers did not expect such a large crowd and no security measures were put in place on the ground to control them, sources said.

About 6,000 people came to the ground to watch the football match as it was a holiday. The injured are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in Nilambur, Vandoor, Perinthalmanna and Manjeri.

The accident occurred when the final match between United FC Nellikuth and Royal Travel Kozhikode was about to start. The collapsed gallery was on the east side of the ground. The temporary floodlight stand attached to the gallery also collapsed with it. Most people got injured as floodlights fell on them. Several other people were injured in the ensuing push and pull.
