Price to be paid for maladministration

kk

Sri Lanka is currently witnessing a disaster that befalls any ruler who forgets the country and its people. For weeks, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has been literally testing the people. Despite the plight of the people, Rajapaksa was not ready to find a solution or relinquish power. At last, he was forced to announce his resignation. Rajapaksa had tried his best to stay in power. But when nothing worked, he was forced to give up power. By then the situation had completely gone out of control. Five people, including an MP, were killed and at least 200 were injured in the riots that took place in various places, including Colombo. The riots continue unabated. The houses and establishments of ruling party members and government buildings are under attack. Rajapaksa's residence was also targeted by anti-government activists. Two of his houses were set on fire by protesters. Ruling party MPs are unable to take to the streets.

The main culprits behind the current decline of Sri Lanka are the administrators who do not know to rule the nation. As the riots intensified, the army took control of the capital, Colombo. Peace can be restored in the island nation only if the riots end, the situation calms down and the ground is prepared for new elections.

Unprecedented borrowing and misguided economic policies have led to the devastation of Sri Lanka. Allowing China to make large investments in Sri Lanka only out of selfish interests was a major setback. The Sri Lankan economy has also been hit hard by the continued failure to repay large loans from foreign institutions. The tourism sector, the main source of income, came to a complete standstill due to the Covid pandemic. Due to the stupid decisions taken by the authorities to overcome the financial crisis, people began to suffer from inflation and other problems. The price of one kilo of rice went up to four hundred rupees! Rajapaksa tried to stay in power by any means in the midst of all this misery. From the outset, he sought to keep the administration as a family affair.

Although the family rule ended with the resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa, the future of Sri Lanka is still bleak. The Sri Lankan Parliament still exists. Lankans will have to wait a year for new elections to take place. An attempt was already made to form an all-party government before. However, opposition parties refused the offer by stating that they will not be part of the government under President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Since the will of the people can be measured only be measured by a new election, it is time to look at the way forward. India also wants peace and tranquillity in its neighbouring country.
