COLOMBO: Ranil Wickremesinghe has been elected as the new president of Sri Lanka. Wickremesinghe won after defeating SLPP parliamentarian Dullas Alahaperuma for 134 votes. 223 people voted in the 225-member parliament.
Alahaperuma got 82 votes. Four votes were invalid. Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned from the post of President two days back. Then UNP leader Renil Wickremesinghe was taking charge as acting president.
He responded that the country's economy will be stabilized within a year. Meantime, the protesters have not accepted the election results. The agitators said Renil is the nominee of the Rajapaksa family.
