MANNAR: In the Mahatma Gandhi Boat Race finals, the rower of the Kerala Police team, which rowed Niranam Chundan, pushed the captain of the opponent Cheruthana Chundan off the boat. As a result, the Cheruthana Chundan lost its balance and capsized. With the opponent boat getting capsized, Niranam Chundan finished first. Later, a scuffle broke out over this during the prize distribution. Police intervened and calmed down the scene.

Problems started between the rowers even before the start of the race. The match started after an hour's delay after the organizers resolved the issue. During the race, there was a fierce competition between Niranam Chundan, captained by Regi Adivaikkal on the third track, and Cheruthana Chundan, captained by Sreekumar on the middle track. Just before the finish, a rower from Niranam Chundan pushed the captain of the opponent into the backwater. After the boat capsized, the rowers managed to swim ashore. The boat was later recovered.
