LONDON: It is a proud moment for India as Rishi Sunak becomes Prime Minister of Britain. This is the first time an Indian origin has reached Britain's highest office.

Rishi's ancestors were born in Punjab and migrated first to East Africa and then to Britain in the 1960s. Rishi Sunak was born on May 12, 1980 in Southampton, Hampshire as the eldest son of British-born Yashvir Sunak and Usha. Rishi's wife is Akshata Murthy, daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy.

Rishi is a person who does not forget India and Indian traditions. He has said that his family always reminds him of his heritage, culture and values. He also visits India from time to time. Rishi, an MP from Yorkshire, took oath in Parliament by placing his hands on Bhagavad Gita. He is the first British parliamentarian to take such an oath. Rishi once said that Bhagavad Gita comes to his rescue in stressful situations and reminds him of his duty.

Sweet revenge

As Rishi Sunak becomes the British Prime Minister, it will also be sweet revenge. After centuries of colonization by the Europeans, especially the British, who plundered wealth to make the British system wealthy, the UK will now be controlled by an Indian-origin man. When 42-year-old Rishi Sunak becomes the prime minister, Indians will have the pleasure of settling some scores.

Rishi Sunak will also be the first Asian to become British Prime Minister. It is also a good day for Asian countries as now an Asian holds the power of Britain that colonized many Asian countries. The same goes for African countries. The reason is that Rishi Sunak's ancestors first migrated to East Africa and settled there. It was from here that Rishi Sunak migrated to Southampton in southern England. Sunak's father worked as a general practitioner in the National Health Service and mother as a pharmacist.

Will Sunak rule for long?

Another question that arises when Indian-origin Rishi Sunak becomes British Prime Minister is how long he will hold the chair. Because in the last six years, there were five Prime Ministers in Britain. There are those who have ruled for years to those who have been in the Prime Minister's chair for only a few days. Sunak, who will become the fifth prime minister in recent times, is confident of the positions he held at such a young age, and the lessons learned from it are sure to help.

Born on May 12, 1980 in Southampton, England, Rishi has been active in politics since 2010. Sunak won the 2015 UK general election from Richmond. Served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary during former Prime Minister Theresa May's second term. Rishi Sunak was a member of the Select Committee on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for two years from 2015 to 2017. Later, in 2019, he served as Chief Secretary to the Treasury under the Boris Johnson government. Sunak was promoted in 2020 to Chancellor of the Exchequer, Britain's second most important position.
