NEW DELHI: Edtech major Byju’s and MPL Sports, the two main sponsors of the Indian cricket team, may exit from their sponsorship deals, according to reports. In June, the Byju’s extended their jersey sponsorship deal with the BCCI until November 2023 for USD 35 million. A report is coming out that Byju’s is preparing to terminate the contract with the board.

The BCCI had received an email from Byju’s on November 4 requesting to terminate the contract after the recently concluded T20 World Cup. Then the matter was discussed in the BCCI Apex Council meeting held yesterday. Based on discus with Byju’s, BCCI officials have clarified that they have asked Byju’s to continue with the current arrangement and continue the partnership at least until March 2023.

Byju’s has recently been accused of buying student databases and making threatening calls. Even the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights had come out against Byju’s in this regard. But Byju’s had strongly denied this allegation. In a press release, Byju’s clarified that they have never purchased student database and do not make threat calls.

Byju’s was one of the sponsors of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The edtech company recently announced plans to lay off more than five percent of its workforce.
