Varisu vs Thunivu box office: Ajith takes lead in Tamil Nadu, Vijay starrer creates storm across nation

This year's Pongal has seen a clash of titans at the South Indian box office. Thalapathy Vijay starrer Varisu and Ajith Kumar's Thunivu was released amid much fan frenzy as fans of both actors turned the occasion into a festival. Both sets of fans want their favourite actor to come out on top. The movies opened to positive word of mouth from fans and to mixed reviews among the general audience. Now, all eyes are regarding the first-day collections of both films. According to the reports that have come out now, it can be said that both these films are engaged in a close contest at the box office.

According to a report, Varisu has collected Rs 26.5 crores across the country whereas Thunivu has collected Rs 26 crores. But when it comes to Tamil Nadu, Thunivu enjoyed a slight advantage due to the higher number of screens and earned Rs 17.5 crores while Varisu earned Rs 17.5 crores. Reports claim that the Vijay starrer collected Rs 5 crores from Karnataka and Rs 3.5 crores from Kerala.

Ajith's film Thunivu is based on the theme of bank robbery. Vijay's Varisu is a family entertainer with action and drama.
