KOCHI: When you enjoy a cup of tea at "Snehasparsham" in Chembumukk, Kakkanad, you’re also supporting a noble cause. This unique cafeteria is managed by intellectually challenged children from the Snehanilayam Special School and Vocational Training Center, run by the Sannyasi Sabha, 'Ishoyude Thiruhridaya Dasikal.'
Eight senior students—Satheesh, Sibi, Nakash, Shinu, Jomi, Rishi, Anvi and Ankitha—are responsible for preparing food, serving customers and cleaning tables. Their hard work and dedication are evident in every aspect of the cafe.
Inaugurated by Kochi Metro MD Loknath Behra on June 12, "Snehasparsham" has already received an invitation to operate inside the Chembumukk metro station once the metro extension to Kakkanad is completed.
Rich menu
Open from 10 AM to 7 PM (except Sundays), the cafe offers a variety of items. Customers can enjoy sodas and mojitos in flavors like lime, orange, strawberry, blueberry and pineapple, as well as different types of ice creams and sweets. The menu also includes tea, coffee, chocolate/vegetable sandwiches, panipuri, sevpuri, pav bhaji and other daily specials.
Empowering through employment
The eight children work in various shifts, earning a monthly salary between 1,000 and 5,000 rupees, depending on their hours. This opportunity is crucial for their development, teaching them valuable skills such as money management, counting and customer service. It also helps them build relationships within the community.
In addition to the cafe, a section showcases and sells handmade items crafted by the children, including bottles with LED lights, necklaces, clips, key chains, bags and files.
