MILAN: An unprecedented crisis has hit the Olympic Village, where athletes will be staying for the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics. The complaint was triggered by a lack of condoms in the village. Olympics organisers stocked nearly 10,000 condoms for approximately 2,900 athletes, yet supplies were depleted within the first three days. The organisers characterised the rapid depletion as unexpected and said that they are working to replenish, though specific delivery times for new batches are uncertain.
The organisers had stocked a high number of condoms because the Olympic Village is a place where thousands of athletes would live together for weeks. Providing condoms in the Olympic Village has been a tradition for years. This is done to promote safe sex and to maintain sexual health when athletes from all over the world arrive in a very small Games Village. Organisers say condoms are essential to alleviate the intense stress of athletes. The organisers also clarify that the physical and mental health of athletes is also important for the Athletes' Village.
The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics supplied approximately 200,000 male condoms and 20,000 female condoms for roughly 10,500 athletes. 300,000 contraceptives were distributed in total to both men and women. This was reduced to 10,000 in Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics. This is what caused the crisis.
