COLOMBO: Former champions Australia opened their T20 World Cup campaign in style with a convincing 67-run victory over Ireland. Batting first, Australia posted a competitive total of 182 for 6 in 20 overs. Marcus Stoinis top-scored with 45 off 29 balls. Matt Renshaw added 37 (33), while Josh Inglis provided momentum with a quick 37 off 17 deliveries. Cameron Green chipped in with 21 (11). Cooper Connolly (11 not out off 8) and Xavier Bartlett (11 not out off 6) added valuable runs in the final overs.

In reply, Ireland were bowled out for 115 in 16.5 overs while chasing 183. Their innings suffered an early setback when captain Paul Stirling retired hurt after scoring just one run. George Dockrell was the lone bright spot for Ireland, scoring 41 off 29 balls after coming in at number eight. Lorcan Tucker made 24 (27), while Ross Adair scored 12 (9). The rest of the batting lineup failed to make an impact.

Australian pacer Nathan Ellis was named Player of the Match for his outstanding spell, taking four wickets for just 12 runs, as Australia sealed a comfortable opening win.
