MUMBAI: India is in fifth place in the World Test Championship table after losing the Test series against South Africa 2-0. Fans are criticising Indian coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar for the defeat. Meanwhile, news has emerged that the BCCI is very unhappy with what Gambhir said after the match.
Gambhir, who stated that this is a team that performed brilliantly in England, reminded that he is the same guy under whom India won the Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup. Gambhir also made it clear that everyone, including himself, is responsible for the defeat and that the BCCI will decide his future as a coach. Gambhir's justification after the defeat comes at a time when everyone is unhappy with the experiments he is doing, including with the batting order. Although the BCCI is currently supporting him, his future will be decided by looking at India's performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
The BCCI was unhappy with Gambhir's comments about the pitch after the Kolkata Test and also did not like Gambhir's tone of voice. The strong home ground record for the Indian Test cricket team was broken after Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach. Cricket experts and former players have argued that the team's over-reliance on all-rounders and part-time bowlers, at the expense of specialist batsmen and bowlers, has led to structural failures in the five-day format.
India's next Test match is in August 2026, and Gambhir will not be removed from the Test format until then, but India's performance in the Twenty20 World Cup, which will be held from February 7 to March 8, could certainly affect his future.
